April 29: Day of immunology

DOI 2009

The  ÖGAI was awarded a prize within the frame-work of the Day of Immunology on April 29, 2009 by the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS). We received the fourth prize for our radio spot, that was run several times on this day.

Due to the initiative of the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) the Day of Immunology took place already for the 7th time this year. The aim is to focus public interest world-wide on research in immunology and its significance for the public health sector. Public interest for the importance of the immune system as a basis for health and well-being should be strengthened. Although public interest in a strong immune system is very big, a lot of basic details about the actual reactions and their relevance for a well-functioning immune system are barely known. This day is meant to show accomplishments of immunological research as well as still unsolved challenges in the continued development of a  highly focused level of influence on the immune system.

The Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology is an important factor in spreading the information among the public, offers a forum for intense exchange of research ideas and supports early-career members through grants and prizes.

In spite of great achievments in recent research in immunology many questions remain unanswered. How can the immune system be persuaded to actively fight against an existing tumor or would it also be possible to develop prophylactic vaccinations against, for example, common tumors? How could the onset of autoimmune diseases be avoided completely? How can a life-long tolerance against foreign tissues (transplantations) or usually harmless  substances (allergens) be created? How can vaccinations against persistent infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis or malaria be developed?

May the Day of Immunology strongly emphasize the importance of this undertaking given that many patients suffer from severe immunological diseases.

Cooperations both on a national and international level are essential as well as support of early-career scientists and doctors. This is made possible among others by the support of ÖGAI.

This year's motto is 'Focus on vaccination'

More than 500 million people suffer from malfunctions or diseases of the immune system. On the Day of Immunology public interest for the importance of the immune system as a basis for health and well-being should be strengthened.

On occasion of the Day of the Day of Immunology 2015, a service-day took place at the Medical University of Vienna. The scientific communication project (WKP39)  "Food allergy - a hard nut to crack", sponsored by the FWF and under the umbrella of ÖGAI was shown in the Lugner City. The focus was on food allergy, its diagnosis, therapy and prevention, as well as on the intestine, the central organ of the immune system.

"Immunotherapy" is this years's topic. For a better understanding of the immune system, ÖGAI published on its website a series of easy to understand interactive media.

The major focus of the 13th Day of Immunology is on the discovery of immunoglobulin (Ig)E 50 years ago which has markedly contributed to the understanding of allergic diseases. IgE-mediated allergies are the most prevalent hypersensitivity reactions of the immune system.
