ECI 2015 Report

The 4th European Immunology Congress (4th ECI) was organized by the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology, ÖGAI, under the auspices of the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) and took place in Vienna, Austria, from September 6-9, 2015 Eur. J. Immunol, 2015, 45:2710-11.

During the festive opening ceremony the delegates were welcomed by Barbara Bohle, President of the Scientific Program Committee, Winfried Pickl, Congress President, and Lorenzo Moretta, EFIS President. The welcoming words of the ÖGAI and EFIS representatives were framed by wonderful music provided by the Klangvereinigung Wien Orchester conduced so brilliantly by Michael Zlabinger. Embedded into popular and at the same time very elegantly displayed Bethoven, Mozart and Strauss pieces, the key-note lecture of Klaus Rajewsky, the doyen of B cell immunology, culminated into a very memorable first scientific high-light of the 4th ECI.

Directly after the the opening ceremony the exhibition on ‘Emerging Immunology: Vienna’s contributions’ meticulously curated by Johann Eibl and Othmar Förster was opened by EFIS president Lorenzo Moretta and the Rector of the Medical University of Vienna Wolfgang Schütz. The exhibition high-lighted the outstanding achievements of immunological research performed during the turn of the 19th to the 20th century in Vienna. Currently, the exhibition is being displayed at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, Währinger Straße 18-20, Hörsaalzentrum, 8th floor (until end of October 2015) and can be visited also on this web-site.

The congress continued with more than 130 excellent key-note and symposia lectures (please see key figures here) on such timely topics as the application and power of chimeric antigen receptor(CAR)-expressing T lymphocytes (Michael Milone), the function of the inflammasome (Luke O’Neill) and mechanisms of intestinal homeostasis and its breakdown (Fiona Powrie), to name just a few. Moreover, the many workshops composed of short oral presentations were of very high quality and accompanied by fruitful and intensive discussions. Similarly, the more than 120 poster sessions, in which more than 2350 posters were displayed during the 4-day congress, were extremely well attended and most competently guided by the respective poster chair people. Together with the networking events provided - including a very interactive welcome reception offering traditional Viennese cuisine with a touch of international street food and a well-tempered taste of Viennese music, the ECI bright sparks pub crawl, mingling local with international young career scientists at typical places in Vienna, and the networking Heurigen event in the picturesque village of Gumpoldskirchen, allowing delegates to meet old friends and make new ones in a typical Austrian summer evening tradition - a perfect mix between a high-caliber scientific presentations and discussions offering enough time for personal chats and interactions was offered by the 4th ECI.

The congress also got a lot of recognition by the related industry, who explained and offered their newest developments and products in a highly appreciated and well recognized industry exhibition, and who sponsored the 4th ECI in many important aspects.

The organizers of the 4th ECI would like to cordially express their gratitude to all those individuals, committee members, societies, institutions and companies, who made the 4th ECI to a big and unforgettable.
